Databeacon Launches .NET-powered Reporting
and Analysis Products
Databeacon Inc., a developer of Web reporting
and data analysis software and Microsoft Empower
ISV partner, has announced the availability of the
Databeacon Smart Client family of products: Databeacon
Smart Client Professional, Databeacon Smart Client
Standard, and entry-level Databeacon Analyst. Leveraging
Microsoft's .NET Framework, Databeacon Smart Client
Professional and Smart Client Standard offer multiple
report viewers to ensure 100 percent adoption of
self-serve explorable reports, strong support for
Windows desktop tools, and no-touch deployment, according
to the company. According to Andy Coutts, CEO of
Databeacon, "The fact that the .NET Framework allows
us to think, act, look and feel like a Microsoft
desktop product, and work seamlessly with Microsoft
desktop products while offering the scalability and
economy of no-touch Web deployments is a huge productivity
plus for our customers."
Databeacon Analyst, an entry-level product for
a power analyst/report designer, offers an individual
the ability to design and use self-serve explorable
reports on their PC from .txt (flat file) data, and
share static versions of those via e-mail. These
explorable reports are compatible with, and can be
used by, the enterprise upgrade products, Databeacon
Smart Client Standard and Databeacon Smart Client
Professional. Over the years, Coutts told 5 Minute
Briefing, there have been requests from people who
are interested in doing analysis "that's more personal
in nature and less corporate or enterprise-wide," According
to Coutts, "One of the things the smart client technology,
through the .NET Framework, allowed us to do was
to create a standalone desktop product primarily
geared for that analyst." This is not intended for
the casual business user. "This is for someone who
wants to drill down and slice and dice the data and
see what information is contained in it."
Databeacon Smart Client Standard includes the
ability to deploy "instant-on" Web reporting and
data analysis from a Microsoft, Linux or Unix Web
server to any PC with the .NET Framework installed.
Included are three viewers: Databeacon Web Reporter,
which offers a simple viewing capability for casual
use information consumers; Databeacon Player for
more frequent data explorers, which offers an instantly
familiar media appliance-like interface; and Databeacon
Insight for power analysts and report designers.
Since all three viewers can share the same reports
out-of-the-box, reports created by a power analyst
can be viewed by users of the Web Reporter and explored
further using the Databeacon Player to create still
other reports. The Linux and Unix server support
will be available in December.
Databeacon Smart Client Professional includes
all the features of Databeacon Smart Client Standard,
along with an Application Program Interface (API)
that provides scripting language for creating custom
data profiles. It also enables custom portal development
and tight integration with existing system interfaces.

Breaking News--Intalio Launches
Intalio|APEX
Intalio, Inc., a business process management company,
today announced the shipping of Intalio|APEX, the
company's Application Process Extension solution.
Designed for Global 2000 firms seeking to maximize
their investments in ERP, CRM and SCM, Intalio|APEX
extends the business processes of packaged applications
without making any significant changes to the applications
themselves.
Available for mySAP Business Suite applications,
Intalio|APEX lets organizations consolidate multiple
instances of mySAP.com, integrate new mySAP.com modules
or upgrade to mySAP.com or SAP R/3 4.7. Intalio|APEX
is built on top of Intalio|n3 3.0, the newest version
of its Business Process Management System. "Our existing
customers are eagerly awaiting the 3.0 release of
our first product," Ismael Ghalimi, president and
chief strategy officer, told 5 Minute Briefing. Intalio|n3
3.0, he noted, adds several new features, including
support for a new notation for business processes,
BPMN ( business process modeling notation), "which
makes our product readily usable by business analysts--by
non-technical people."
With
Intalio|APEX, SAP customers can extend SAP software
processes outside of their host applications, without
ever writing code, to gain best-in-class business
processes and move closer to the next generation
of mySAP.com architecture. Technical and non-technical
SAP users can work with Intalio|APEX to reduce their
total cost of ownership of their SAP applications,
while accommodating changes to the core business
processes that they were originally deployed to support.
SAP
shops integrating new mySAP.com modules can use Intalio|APEX
to automate cross-functional processes to increase
the value of new module deployment, while slashing
process integration costs. For those upgrading to
mySAP.com (or SAP R/3 4.7), Intalio|APEX extends
mySAP.com processes to simplify the migration of
existing customization and significantly reduce code
development. Intalio|APEX has been developed on top
of Intalio|n³, a standards-based and platform-neutral
Business Process Management System (BPMS). "What's
exciting for customers is that it has received the
Powered by SAP NetWeaver certification," said Ghalimi,
noting, it is the "first and only BPM product" to
have received that certification from SAP. "If I
am an SAP customer and I either add NetWeaver or
I want to use NetWeaver, not only do I get the NetWeaver
solution, but I can extend it with BPM capabilities
that are offered by Intalio," said Ghalimi. For more
information, go to www.intalio.com.

Breaking News--iAnywhere Releases
Answers Anywhere
At
the CTIA cellular telephony conference in San Francisco
today, iAnywhere Solutions, Inc., a subsidiary of
Sybase, Inc., unveiled Answers Anywhere, a middleware
platform that features natural language and context
understanding capabilities that make it easier for
end-users of wireless data services to request information,
in their own words, in any language. This product
is the next generation of technology Sybase acquired
from Dejima, Inc., earlier this year.
Answers Anywhere sits between an application and
a database and translates XML queries in SQL or formats
appropriate for other application programming interfaces. "We
have a novel approach to natural language processing," Antoine
Blondeau, senior director of business development
at iAnywhere, told 5 Minute Briefing late on Friday. "It
is not linguistic. We use software development methods
and reverse the paradigm."
Three versions of the technology are being unveiled
at the conference--a developer edition, an enterprise
edition for mobile and desktop users through Web,
email, voice and text messaging interfaces, and a
version specifically for short-text messaging and
voice applications. "You just need to be a Java developer," Blondeau
said. "You don't need any knowledge of linguistics." In
addition to being the first release under the Sybase
umbrella, Version 3.5 accelerates the pace at which
applications can be developed, Blondeau said. In
the future, he anticipates Answers Anywhere will
be further integrated into the iAnywhere solution
set. For more information, go to www.ianywhere.com/products/

Veritas Unveils i3 version 7.0
In
its first major release since the purchase of Precise
Software, Veritas Software has announced the general
availability of Veritas i3 version 7.0 application
management software. The latest version of the software
enables IT administrators to simultaneously compare
performance and availability characteristics of complex
applications over clusters and multiple-instances
to achieve service level agreement compliance. VERITAS
i3 version 7.0 software provides tools to simplify
and consolidate the management of complex applications
and proactively drill down and resolve availability
and performance issues before they impact users and
the business.
The
new release adds functionality that focuses on availability,
Ray Suarez, product line manager at Veritas for application
performance management products, told 5 Minute Briefing
in an exclusive interview. For example, Version 7.0
can generate synthetic transactions that allow administrators
to identify the root causes of performance and availability
bottlenecks, suggest remedies and verify the problem
resolution. A new technology called the SmartLink
correlation engine uses physical tags to automate
the tracing of real transactions across application
tiers and tracking of service levels, real users
and locations for each transaction, enabling administrators
to correlate total response times and identify transaction
characteristics and performance issues. Moreover,
Version 7.0 monitors how the use of applications
change over time, pinpointing hot spots and database
table growth. "It can help find problems before they
become problems," Suarez said.
Version 7.0 is increasingly integrated with other
Veritas tools, including the Veritas Cluster Server
and Veritas Storage Foundation software, allowing
administrators to collect information from clusters
and files and drill all the way down the stack to
identify the root cause of service degradation issues,
effectively bringing together infrastructure and
application management. "Performance management is
an important part of our complete utility computing
visions," Suarez said. More information can be found
at www.veritas.com.
